The State of Illinois requires all its drivers to be insured. This is obligatory and an uninsured person may find himself paying a heavy fine or getting his driving license suspended. Like some other states, the auto insurance companies in Illinois also issue an insurance card as a proof that the vehicle is insured. It is necessary for the driver to carry this card whenever he is driving the vehicle as he may be asked to produce it any time.

Auto liability insurance is a must for Illinois car insurance. The auto liability insurance pays the medical bills, vehicle repair and property damage in case of accidents. It also covers the funeral expenses in case of death and loss of wages when the other person suffers from severe injuries. The minimum auto liability limit of the Illinois car insurance is fixed at 20/40/15. This means your insurance company will pay $ 20,000 if one person was present in the other vehicle or if you hit one pedestrian. This amount covers the physical injuries you have inflicted. The liability amount is $ 40,000 for physical injuries for two or more people in the accident. The liability insurance also contains an amount of $ 15,000 if you cause damage to someone else’s property for example if you hit a fence or a mail box or any stationary car etc.

Among other optional coverage provided by the Illinois car insurance is the Uninsured motor coverage. Although it is not compulsory, it is advisable to add this coverage to your insurance. The lower level of this coverage is equal to the physical injury liability coverage which is $20,000 per person and $40,000 per accident. This coverage provides you protection if you are hit by an uninsured driver. The Under insured motorist coverage (UIM) is also optional and it covers the difference between your UIM and the liability level of the underinsured driver which are less than your UIM.

Other optional policies recommended by Illinois car insurance are Comprehensive coverage and Collision coverage. The state of Illinois does not need you to take out PIP coverage and the No fault coverage.
